This WebQuest allows students to investigate and recommend improvements to
remodel a house to increase energy efficiency. You may use the This Cold House:
Managing Energy (full version in groups), or This Cold House : Energy
Improvements (adapted for individuals)or adapt either to meet your needs.
Please feel free to share your success with us.
Full Version
This
Cold House : Managing Energy - Separate teams are responsible for
all aspects of the job and teams compete by building a display to convince the
homeowner to choose the improvements they have gathered. Allow 10-12
class sessions. The teacher notes discuss factors that should be considered as you decide how to
approach this project.
Keep in mind your goals and how much time you have to devote to this project as
you make your decision.
Condensed Version
This Cold House: Energy Improvements - A condensed where
individuals are responsible for one aspect of the remodeling the house. Each
person presents the problems, solutions, and costs for their assigned task in a
PowerPoint. Allow 5 class sessions for this
version. Teacher notes are below.
Teacher Notes
Time Commitment
You will need to decide your objectives and how much time you can reserve
for this project. We have made variations based on the ability of students and
time we have available. The full version takes 10 - 12 class sessions, the condensed
version, 5 class sessions.
Grouping
We have tried various forms of groups. The Full Version builds a
team with a representative for each of the five areas. (appliances, doors and
windows, lighting and planting, heating and cooling, walls and roof) The
Condensed Version allows individuals to work on each area.
Preparation
1. Check the links on the website to be sure everything is working. We update in
the Spring of each year. Email Pat Eloranta if links are broken. elorapa (at domain name) medford.k12.wi.us
2. Run off journal copies for each student, if you choose
to use them. We have
combined all necessary
forms into one packet in
Microsoft Word format. You may not need all pages if you are working on a
condensed version. We have added a new journal for the condensed version. We three-hole punched and secured the packets with
brads.
3. Gather advertisements from local home improvement centers and
appliance stores.
4. Book lab time as needed
5. Print additional copy of the rubrics for
evaluating the work. (Included in the Word packet link above)
Using the Home Energy Site
Use the data sheet of information to enter information
about This Cold House. This includes the all the details for the house as described. You may want to customize this data to
your geographic location.
Record your session number and keep this on file for your records. Each
group will need the same information and their own ID session number to
test their theories and demonstrate the effect of the changes. You may complete this process for each group, or print the data
and have each group enter their data along with the changes they plan to
make. Be sure to write
down the session numbers.
Evaluations
Use the group rubric to evaluate the display, the changes made and presentation debate/discussion. Collect the journals and essays. Use the individual rubric to score the research, the essay content and mechanics and the journal.
